Apple has launched the next generation of its artificial intelligence features, called Apple Intelligence, with the iOS 18.2 update. This highly anticipated update for iPhone users includes new features such as Genmoji, Image Playground, ChatGPT integration with Siri, Visual Intelligence, advanced writing tools, and more.
For those unfamiliar, Apple introduced Apple Intelligence at the WWDC 2024 conference. However, unlike in previous years, these updates were not ready in time for the release of the iPhone 16 series, leaving users waiting since then for Apple to bring the AI features to its new devices.
New Apple Intelligence Features with iOS 18.2:
- Image Playground:
Apple is introducing the ability for iOS 18 users to generate images using its AI model. A standalone Image Playground app is available on iOS 18, allowing users to create custom images. Additionally, Apple offers suggestions like costumes, items, or locations based on conversations in the Messages app or even your Notes. However, the images generated through Image Playground are currently cartoonish and do not produce photorealistic results at this time.- Genmoji and Image Wand:
The new Genmoji feature leverages AI to create entirely new emojis, which are stored neatly in the emoji keyboard. It also allows users to generate emojis of their loved ones by accessing data from the People album in the Photos app.
Another standout feature in the update is Image Wand. This tool enables iPad users to transform their rough sketches in the Notes app into fully developed images using only text prompts.
- ChatGPT Integration with Siri:
Apple is introducing ChatGPT integration with Siri, allowing the voice assistant to tap into OpenAI’s chatbot for assistance when it encounters complex requests. Apple has stated that users will be notified before their queries are sent to ChatGPT, and their IP addresses will be masked to ensure privacy, with OpenAI unable to store any requests. Notably, Apple users don’t need to sign in to their ChatGPT account to use this feature, though they can do so if they have a paid subscription.
- New Settings for Camera Control:
Apple is introducing additional options for Camera Control, the touch-sensitive button first introduced with the iPhone 16 series. Users can now lock exposure and focus by double-pressing the Camera Control button while taking a photo. This feature is disabled by default but can be enabled in the ‘Camera Control’ menu within Settings.
Additionally, a new setting allows users to adjust the double-click speed for Camera Control, with options including ‘Default,’ ‘Slow,’ and ‘Slower.’
- Find My Now Allows Sharing Location of Lost Items:
The Find My app is gaining a new feature in the iOS 18.2 beta 2 that enables users to share the location of their lost items, making it easier to seek help in locating them. Users can generate a link for their lost item in the Find My app by selecting “Share Item Location” and share it with friends or authorities. Notably, the recipient can access the location of the lost item even if they don’t use an Apple device.
The shared link will automatically expire after one week or once the item is found. Additionally, a new “Show Contact Info” option in the Find My app, when activated, will direct the recipient to a webpage displaying the owner’s contact details, including their phone number and email address.
