Sydney Sweeney has had enough of body-shamers.
The “Euphoria” star, 27, responded to negative comments about paparazzi photos of her in a bikini on Instagram. In a video, she highlighted several of the hurtful remarks, with some calling her “chunky” and suggesting she needed to lose weight.
The video then shifted to footage of Sweeney training for her role as boxer Christy Martin in an upcoming biopic. It showed her working out, sparring in the ring, and flexing her muscles. She chose not to include a caption.
Sweeney received an outpouring of support from fellow actors, including Glen Powell, her co-star in the rom-com Anyone But You. In a comment on her post, Powell praised her, stating her biopic would be “fire.” Alien: Romulus star Isabela Merced also chimed in, commenting that those making such remarks would never say it to her face because they’re “too scared.” Sweeney liked Merced’s comment.
Other stars, like Riverdale‘s Lili Reinhart, also showed support, calling Sweeney “incredible” and commending her dedication to her work. Kesha described her as a “strong baddie,” while Rachel Brosnahan posted three fire emojis.
Sweeney, who is set to portray Christy Martin, the first woman to be signed to a promotional contract by Don King, was announced as part of the biopic earlier this year. Black Bear described the film as the “unbelievable true story” of Martin, America’s most successful female boxer in the 1990s. After wrapping filming in November, Sweeney shared on Instagram that it had been “one of the most emotional, transformative experiences of my life.”
“This story is so much bigger than just a film,” she said. “It’s a testament to resilience, survival, and finding the strength to keep fighting. I can’t wait for you all to see it — not only because I’m proud of the transformation and the work I’ve poured into it, but because Christy’s story deserves to be told.”
Sweeney also joked that she had been “living in workout clothes” since June while preparing for the role, adding, “I basically don’t remember anything else anymore.”
Previously, Sweeney called out film producer Carol Baum, who allegedly said during a Q&A that the actress was “not pretty” and “can’t act.” A statement from Sweeney’s representative at the time stated, “How sad that a woman in the position to share her expertise and experience chooses instead to attack another woman.”
