Billboard has named Beyoncé the greatest pop star of the 21st century, as announced on Tuesday as part of their ongoing series.
According to Billboard’s Andrew Unterberger, Beyoncé earned the top spot on the editorial list due to her 25 years of influence, impact, and evolution. The publication highlighted that Beyoncé’s position at the top reflects her status as a performer and creator whose dedication to innovation, growth, and excellence has set the standard for all other pop stars of the past quarter-century.
Beyoncé holds the title of the most Grammy-awarded artist, with a record-breaking 32 wins, and with 11 more nominations for her 2024 album Cowboy Carter, she is expected to add to her trophy collection in January.
The “Texas Hold ‘Em” singer also has a longstanding presence on Billboard’s charts. She has earned nine No. 1 hits and 24 top 10 singles on the Hot 100. Additionally, eight of her albums have reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200, starting with her 2003 solo debut Dangerously In Love. After her success as part of Destiny’s Child, 11 of Beyoncé’s solo albums have charted in the top 10.
Since August, Billboard has been ranking the top 25 pop artists of the past 25 years based on their staff’s choices. These artists are considered to have most defined pop stardom and exemplified pop greatness since the year 2000.
Last week, Taylor Swift was ranked No. 2 on the list, with Rihanna at No. 3. The top 10 also includes Adele, Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber, Kanye West, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, and Drake.
Katy Perry rounds out the top 25, with other notable artists such as Bad Bunny, The Weeknd, One Direction, Miley Cyrus, Eminem, Usher, and others placed in between.
