Khalil Ur-Rahman Haqqani, who is on the US sanctions list and is rarely seen without an automatic weapon, was the brother of Jalaluddin Haqqani, the founder of the Haqqani Network. This terror group was responsible for some of the deadliest attacks during the Taliban’s two-decade insurgency.
Kabul, Afghanistan:
The Afghan Minister for Refugees, Khalil Ur-Rahman Haqqani, was killed on Wednesday in a suicide bombing at the ministry’s offices in Kabul, according to a government source who spoke to AFP.
“Unfortunately, an explosion occurred at the Ministry of Refugees, and Minister Khalil Ur-Rahman Haqqani has been martyred, along with some of his colleagues,” the official said, requesting anonymity. The explosion was confirmed to be a suicide attack.
Khalil Ur-Rahman Haqqani, who is on the US sanctions list and is rarely seen without an automatic weapon, was the brother of Jalaluddin Haqqani, the founder of the Haqqani Network, a terror group responsible for some of the deadliest attacks during the Taliban’s two-decade insurgency. He was also the uncle of Sirajuddin Haqqani, the current interior minister.
The Haqqani family is believed to be engaged in a power struggle within the Taliban leadership, with the Haqqanis representing a more pragmatic faction in contrast to those aligned with the hardline interpretation of Islamic law championed by the Taliban’s supreme leader based in Kandahar.
Since the Taliban’s return to power, several senior leaders, including provincial governors, commanders, and clerics, have been killed, mostly in attacks claimed by the Islamic State group.
Since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in 2021, bringing an end to their conflict with the United States and NATO-led foreign forces, violence has decreased. However, the regional branch of the Islamic State, known as Islamic State Khorasan, remains active in the country, frequently targeting civilians, foreigners, and Taliban officials with gun and bomb attacks.
