Six months after unveiling it as a concept, Mercedes-AMG has now revealed the PureSpeed, a roofless, windshield-less version of the SL63. The production model closely resembles the concept, featuring the Formula 1-inspired “halo” bar that divides the cockpit and the 300SLR-style humps behind the seats. Mercedes plans to produce just 250 units as part of its exclusive “Mythos” series, which will likely come with a hefty price tag.

The red and black livery, along with the #10 on the fenders, pays homage to the 192 Mercedes-Benz Targa Florio, which won the iconic race that year. Mercedes chose these colors to align with the traditional shades of Italian constructors, hoping to avoid interference from local fans. Alternatively, the PureSpeed is also available in matte silver, reflecting the classic German racing colors.

The distinctive front fascia of the PureSpeed takes inspiration from a modern Mercedes, the AMG One Hypercar, and features custom aerodynamic elements to accommodate its roofless, windshield-less design. The halo is a fully structural steel component, complemented by deployable roll bars behind the rear seats. Mechanically, the PureSpeed shares much with the SL63, including a 577-horsepower version of AMGā€™s 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8, a nine-speed transmission, all-wheel drive, and advanced chassis systems like hydraulic roll control and rear-wheel steering.

Mercedes also provides two custom-designed helmets with the PureSpeed, equipped with an intercom system that allows the driver and passenger to communicate. The intercom is integrated with the carā€™s infotainment, enabling music and phone calls. Additionally, thereā€™s a unique IWC Schaffhausen clock mounted on the dashboard. While the PureSpeed does have a roof of sorts, itā€™s a fabric cover that stretches over the halo and attaches to the wheel arches, similar to those found on vintage race cars. However, it is intended solely for use when the car is parked.

Mercedes has yet to announce pricing or confirm whether the PureSpeed will be legal in the US. As is often the case with limited-edition models, they may already be sold out by the time they are revealed to the public, though this doesn’t seem to be the case here. If you’re interested in owning one, itā€™s a good idea to reach out to your local Mercedes dealer to channel your inner Stirling Moss.
